Nathan Allen Sharpnack, 37, of Winterset, Iowa, was killed on Saturday, December 4, 2021, while participating in a large deer drive in the Red Rock Wildlife Management Area north of Knoxville. Around 2:45 p.m. in wooded terrain near the Whitebreast Arm of Lake Red Rock, Sharpnack was struck in the torso by a round fired by another member of the hunting party of about 20 people.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded and opened an investigation; an autopsy was scheduled with the state medical examiner. Authorities said the fatal shot was believed to have come from within the group. No arrests or identification of a specific suspect were publicly released in the immediate aftermath, and the death was reported as a hunting accident.
