Dedrikk Fisher, a 20-year-old Black man, was shot in the chest during a dispute at a Marshalltown, Iowa residence on January 17, 2015. He was taken to a local hospital but died about an hour later; the medical examiner determined the cause of death was a single gunshot wound that pierced his heart and left lung.
A manhunt focused on 19-year-old Jose Enrique Morales. Morales was arrested on January 21 at a local apartment complex after investigators followed up with a potential witness. Authorities say others helped Morales evade capture: 26-year-old Bethany Leigh Brant was charged with accessory after the fact and neglect of a dependent person for allegedly harboring Morales and endangering a child, and 19-year-old Francisco Frankie Padilla-Galvez was charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly hiding the .22 caliber revolver used in the shooting.
Morales was initially charged with first-degree murder and pleaded not guilty; a jury later convicted him of second-degree murder. At sentencing, the court imposed a 50-year prison term, with a minimum of 35 years before parole eligibility, and ordered $150,000 in restitution to Fisher’s parents. Fisher’s family delivered emotional victim impact statements at the hearing.
If anyone knew Dedrikk, his activities that night, or saw something in the northwest part of Marshalltown on January 17, 2015, please share what you know.
