Marvin Huelsing, an 80-year-old lifelong farmer and cattle trucker from near Deloit, Iowa, was shot and killed on March 10, 2014. Huelsing and his wife Madelyn had worked their land raising grain and livestock; he was described as a familiar, friendly presence in Carroll and Crawford County communities.
Authorities say three people from Denison — 20-year-old Jayden Chapman, 26-year-old Michael Schenk, and 36-year-old Erica Dains — went to Huelsing’s property after using methamphetamine intending to steal scrap metal. Their truck became stuck in the mud, a confrontation followed, and both Huelsing and 81-year-old Alice Huisenga, who was present at the property, were shot and killed. The perpetrators then set fire to a mobile home on the property with the victims inside to try to conceal the crimes.
Investigators identified the three suspects; Dains pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and accessory after the fact and agreed to testify. Trials of Chapman and Schenk produced guilty verdicts on two counts of first-degree murder; Schenk was also convicted of arson, while Chapman was convicted of reckless use of fire. Both Chapman and Schenk face mandatory life sentences. If anyone knew Marvin, Alice, or saw activity near the Huelsing property in March 2014, please come forward with information.
