On the morning of September 13, 2013, Rockwell City, Iowa, lost a member of its small police force when 37-year-old Officer Jamie Daniel Buenting was shot during a standoff. Officers had been at a Pleasant Street residence earlier that night after reports a man wanted on a felony domestic assault warrant was inside. The suspect, identified as Corey Allen Trott, barricaded himself and refused to surrender for about four hours.

At approximately 1:40 a.m. a single shot was fired from the house, striking Officer Buenting. He was taken to a hospital in Lake City and later pronounced dead. The standoff continued; an Iowa State Patrol tactical team was called and Trott surrendered around 5:30 a.m. The Rockwell City Police Department, a four-officer department for which Buenting had served eight of his twelve years in law enforcement, described him as a husband and father of two young children.

Trott, 32 at the time, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. If anyone knew Officer Buenting, the residence on Pleasant Street that night, or saw activity in that neighborhood in the hours before the shooting, please come forward with information.
