On the night of January 3, 1978, in Eddyville, Iowa, John Franklin Sr., 35, and his 22-year-old wife Michelle were shot to death in their home. Michelle’s mother discovered the bodies on January 4; investigators concluded the killings occurred between 10 p.m. and midnight the previous night.
Police quickly focused on a family member. John Franklin Jr., the 14-year-old son from John Sr.’s earlier marriage, was located the morning after the murders as a runaway, charged in the killings and reported to have confessed during the investigation. When the matter reached trial, John Jr. was acquitted of all charges.
With no conviction and no one held responsible, the double homicide remains officially unsolved. Does anyone have memories or information about the Franklins or Eddyville in 1978 that could shed light on the case?
