On the evening of June 20, 2017, deputies responded to reports of gunshots in the 2800 block of Oakridge Avenue in Central Point, Oregon, and found 58-year-old Duane Levon King deceased inside a recreational vehicle parked at his home. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound; investigators said the lethal trauma came from bullet fragments that had ricocheted off the RV door. A neighbor reported hearing shots and someone exclaiming Oh my God, then saw King’s feet sticking out of the RV before a woman pushed them back inside, closed the door and left in a vehicle.

Police stopped the vehicle and detained the driver, identified as 55-year-old Susan Marie King, who was arrested in connection with the death and whose blood alcohol level was reported at nearly three times the legal limit. She was tried in 2018; a jury acquitted her of murder but convicted her of first-degree manslaughter in a 10-2 verdict and sentenced her to 10 years. The conviction was later overturned after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled non-unanimous jury verdicts unconstitutional.

Anyone with memories of the neighborhood or who knew Duane King or his family is asked to come forward with information.
