David Jesse Hortman, 43, was shot and killed while sleeping in his vehicle at Bastendorff Beach near Coos Bay on August 19, 2014. Hortman, a visitor from Walker, Michigan, had been traveling the Oregon Coast and stopped to rest in the beach lot; he spoke to his mother the night before about finding a place to sleep.
Investigators linked his killing to an earlier slaying that same day. The shooter, identified as 34-year-old Zachary Levi Brimhall of Dillard, Oregon, had first lured and fatally shot his father, 58-year-old William Ray Brimhall, on a remote logging road. Brimhall then drove roughly 50 miles to Bastendorff Beach and opened fire into at least five parked vehicles, striking three that had people inside before killing himself at the scene. Multiple firearms, seal bombs and materials consistent with improvised explosive device components were recovered; notes indicated the shooter planned to kill more people and had struggled with mental illness. Hortman was described as a random victim.
Did anyone in the area see unusual activity at Bastendorff Beach that pre-dawn morning or recognize vehicles connected to the attack?
