A 23-year-old man named Carlos E. Ruemmele was fatally shot near the Holyoke Mall on the evening of July 29, 2020. The shooting happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Holyoke Street and Lower Westfield Road; first responders found the scene empty, and police later learned a male with gunshot wounds had been taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. He died of his injuries at the hospital.

The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office and the Holyoke Police Department treated the death as a homicide and quickly identified a suspect. On July 30, 2020, 19-year-old Skyzen Encarnacion of Springfield turned himself in to Springfield police and was arrested and charged with murder; he pleaded not guilty. Authorities did not immediately release a motive for the shooting.
