A Fourth of July cookout on Fayette Street in Lynn, Massachusetts, became deadly on the evening of July 4, 2020. About 10 p.m., gunfire broke out at the gathering; Noe Hernandez, a 35-year-old Hispanic man from Lynn, was fatally wounded and later pronounced dead at Salem Hospital. Four other people were injured, one with life-threatening wounds.
Authorities described the attack as a drive-by shooting. Investigators say roughly 20 rounds were fired from a rented pickup truck into the crowd. Lynn Police and the Essex State Police Detective Unit identified and arrested four men in the days after the shooting: Tyrell Junior Berberena, 27, of Malden; Marcus Carlisle, 25, of Lynn; Josue Cespedes of Lynn; and Elijah Fontes-Wilson of Lynn.
Subsequent court proceedings produced plea deals and testimony; Cespedes pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 9–12 year sentence. In March 2023 a jury found Berberena and Carlisle guilty of first-degree murder in Hernandez’s death and guilty on multiple counts related to the wounded victims; in April 2023 both men were sentenced to life without parole.
Did anyone at the cookout know Noe Hernandez or see the pickup truck that night?
