On January 15, 2020, 52-year-old Marcos A. Ruiz Rodriguez was shot while working for the Lawrence Department of Public Works. He was filling potholes on Andover Street when gunfire struck him. First responders transported him to Lawrence General Hospital, where he died of his injuries. Investigators found that Ruiz Rodriguez, a Methuen resident born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, was an innocent bystander and not the intended target.
Ruiz Rodriguez had worked for the city for many years and was remembered as a devoted father of two, a hard worker, and a jovial presence among colleagues. An arrest in late February brought a charged suspect into custody and the case moved into the court system, but the community continued to mourn the loss of a man killed while doing his job.
If anyone has information about the shooting or recalled seeing activity on Andover Street that afternoon, please share what you know.
