On August 7, 2017, at about 1:06 a.m., 31-year-old Colin Hodges was found fatally shot on the second-floor rear porch of a residence on South Summer Street in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Another man, 37-year-old Arnaldo Rentas, was also found with apparent gunshot wounds; both were pronounced dead at the scene. Hodges was a Navy veteran (2006–2013), a Holyoke High School graduate who had been studying business at Holyoke Community College, and a father who had organized community events for needy families.

Investigators from the Holyoke Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit working with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office identified 19-year-old Ivan Ramos of Holyoke as a suspect. Authorities say Hodges and Rentas arrived at the second-floor apartment, an altercation occurred, and Ramos allegedly fired several shots as the men tried to flee. Ramos turned himself in at the Holyoke Police Department on August 10, 2017, and the investigation continued.
