Keenan S. Pellot Jr., an 18-year-old Black male from Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was shot outside Chewy’s Barber Shop on Tyler Street on the afternoon of July 31, 2015. He was taken to Berkshire Medical Center a few blocks away, where he died of his wounds. A 17-year-old male was also shot that day and seriously wounded; reports said he was expected to survive.

Local and state police identified an acquaintance, 18-year-old Thomas Lee Newman Jr., as a suspect and issued an arrest warrant. Newman was located in Utica, New York, a few days after the shooting and taken into custody by Utica police and federal officials. He was extradited to Massachusetts and charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, and illegal possession of a firearm. In July 2017 Newman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, the armed assault charge for the other victim, and the firearm charge; a judge sentenced him to life with parole possible after 18 years.
