A family cookout in Taunton, Massachusetts, turned deadly on the evening of June 27, 2015. Police responded to a Weir Street address about 5:45 p.m. after reports of gunfire and found four people with gunshot wounds. Twenty-four-year-old Marques McCassie was taken to Morton Hospital and died about an hour later.
The shooting began after an altercation between McCassie and 22-year-old Lorenze DaVeiga, who had arrived at the gathering. DaVeiga fired a shot that struck McCassie in the flank and another that hit McCassie’s second cousin in the knee. A relative tackled DaVeiga; while on the ground he managed to fire again, this time hitting McCassie in the thigh. McCassie had also fired at DaVeiga, striking him at least four times. DaVeiga fled, later getting medical treatment at Rhode Island Hospital.
Anyone who was at the cookout or has information about what led to the confrontation is asked to share what they know.
