Kyle Brady, 28, was shot and killed in Fall River, Massachusetts, in the early hours of January 1, 2015. Officers arrived at the intersection of Albert and Huard streets about 1:17 a.m.; Brady was pronounced dead at the scene. The shooting grew out of a long-standing feud between Brady and another man over a woman who was the mother of Jeffrey Souza’s children and who was dating Brady at the time.

According to police and a witness statement from Brady’s sister, Souza and Brady had exchanged threats for months and agreed to meet on New Year’s Eve to fight. During that encounter Souza, then 24, shot Brady; he fled to Newport, Rhode Island, and was arrested there before noon on January 1. Souza was initially charged with carrying an illegal firearm and was later charged with murder. At trial the defense argued self-defense; a jury convicted Souza of second-degree murder and assault and battery by discharge of a firearm. Some firearms convictions were later vacated on appeal.
