In the early hours of August 10, 2014, two brothers were fatally shot inside their second-floor apartment on Andrews Street in Lowell, Massachusetts. Joseph Joe Joe Thomas Callahan, 29, and his older brother Keith Callahan, 35, were found dead after neighbors reported hearing a barrage of bullets and police arrived about 2:30 a.m. The brothers were sons of retired Lowell police sergeant Richard Callahan.
Investigators treated the scene as a home invasion. A cigarette butt left at the apartment yielded a DNA profile that investigators matched to 28-year-old Dara Poum of Chelsea. Authorities say Poum allegedly entered the apartment after 2 a.m., demanded to see someone who was not there, and a struggle followed during which both brothers were shot. Police recovered the firearm used in the killings buried in a garden behind the residence of Poum’s girlfriend’s father; ballistics testing linked it to the murders and sneakers belonging to Poum were found with Keith Callahan’s blood on them.
In September 2019 Dara Poum was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, armed home invasion, and possession of a firearm without a license. Joseph Callahan is remembered as the loving father of two young sons. Does anyone have memories of Joseph or details about the Andrews Street neighborhood from that time that might add context to what happened?
