Arlindo DePina Goncalves was 72 when he was shot and killed on January 21, 2009, in Brockton, Massachusetts. A native of Fogo, Cape Verde, he was remembered as a husband, father of eight and a beloved grandfather who enjoyed music and dancing. His funeral was held at St. Edith Stein/St. Edward Parish and he was buried in Melrose Cemetery in Brockton.

That afternoon a self‑proclaimed white supremacist, Keith Luke, went on a violent crime spree after breaking into a home, where he raped a woman and shot her sister. Luke then encountered Arlindo DePina Goncalves on the street and shot him without provocation. A 20‑year‑old woman, Selma Goncalves, was also shot and killed during the rampage. Luke was apprehended after a car chase; at trial, testimony and evidence showed his intent to kill non‑whites and survivors described the attacks.

Does anyone have memories of Arlindo, his family, or information about that day that could add to the record?
