On the evening of May 21, 2007, 18-year-old John Peter Lima was driving in Brockton, Massachusetts, with a friend when another vehicle began aggressively tailgating them with its high beams on. After Lima tapped his brakes, the other car pulled alongside and an occupant fired seven or eight shots into Lima’s vehicle. Struck by the gunfire, Lima steered into a nearby parking lot and the car rolled into an apartment building; he told his friend he was hit and believed he was dying. Lima was taken to Brockton Hospital and died there on May 22, 2007.
Police identified a suspect, Paulo Tavares, and a .22 caliber handgun recovered by officers was linked by ballistics to the shell casings at Lima’s murder scene and to an earlier Brockton shooting about a month before. Tavares was arrested on June 1, 2007, and was convicted of Lima’s murder; that conviction was later overturned after a court found the traffic stop that led to key evidence was unconstitutional. The district attorney’s office announced it intended to retry Tavares.
Are there witnesses or anyone with information about the tailgating incident or the dark vehicle who has not yet spoken to investigators?
