On December 26, 2000, Louis Auguste Javelle, a 58-year-old White man and director of consulting, was fatally shot at his workplace, Edgewater Technology, at 200 Harvard Mill Square in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Javelle was near a copying machine when the gunman, employee Michael Morgan McDermott, shot him with a 12-gauge shotgun. Javelle was one of seven coworkers killed during the attack; police arrested McDermott at the scene and no other suspects were identified.
Prosecutors later presented evidence that McDermott’s wages were being garnished to repay federal taxes, a fact they linked to motive. At trial McDermott offered delusional explanations for the killings that the jury rejected; on April 24, 2002, a Middlesex County jury convicted him on seven counts of first-degree murder and imposed life sentences without parole. Anyone who knew Javelle or was at the Wakefield office that day and has information is asked to come forward.
