On December 26, 2000, Craig W. Wood, 29, was one of seven employees killed in a workplace shooting at Edgewater Technology in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Wood worked there as a technical recruiter. The killings were carried out by a co-worker, 42-year-old software engineer Michael McDermott, who entered the office armed with a semiautomatic rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun and moved through the workspace shooting colleagues.
A witness reported hearing Wood plead with the shooter, saying Mike, no, then sounds of pain and a final plea of Please before Wood was shot multiple times. The other victims were Cheryl Troy, Janice Hagerty, Louis Javelle, Jennifer Bragg Capobianco, Paul Marceau, and Rose Manfredi. The attack was reportedly prompted by McDermott’s anger over a wage garnishment after the IRS ordered the company to withhold back taxes from his pay.
McDermott was taken into custody at the scene, charged with seven counts of murder, convicted on all counts, and sentenced to seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
