On December 26, 2000, a workplace shooting at Edgewater Technology in Wakefield, Massachusetts, left 36-year-old Paul A. Marceau among seven employees killed. The shooter, a coworker identified as 42-year-old Michael McDermott, entered the building armed with a shotgun, an automatic weapon, and a pistol and opened fire on colleagues.
Investigators tied McDermott’s motive to anger over a recent wage garnishment intended to pay back taxes; human resources had notified him weeks earlier that his pay would be garnished. McDermott was arrested at the scene. At trial he claimed insanity, offering unusual delusions, but the prosecution argued he had feigned mental illness. A jury found him guilty on seven counts of murder; he received seven consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
If anyone knew Paul Marceau or was at Edgewater Technology that day and can add detail about his life or the office environment, please share what you know.
