On the evening of January 27, 1978, in Topsfield, Massachusetts, Wilfred Brown, 45, was murdered in his home along with his wife Yoshika, 49, and their daughter Dorina, 20. The killings were carried out with a .22-caliber rifle that had been given to the family’s 15-year-old son, Alfred K. Brown. Yoshika was shot while preparing potatoes in the kitchen, Dorina was dragged from another room and shot multiple times, and Wilfred was found in the garage breezeway with his overcoat torn by bullets.

After the shootings Alfred fled in his father’s car, crashed into a nearby snowbank, and was later located and taken to the police station. He admitted the killings and told investigators he was afraid of getting in trouble over a failing grade in math. Alfred was arrested, tried in adult court beginning February 5, 1979, convicted of three counts of first-degree murder on February 20, 1979, and sentenced to three concurrent life terms.

Are there readers who remember the Browns or the Topsfield area in 1978 and can share any recollections that might add context to this family tragedy?
