Alonzo Rocky Martínez, a 62-year-old Hispanic man and lifelong Taos resident, died on March 1, 2021, after a fatal gunshot wound sustained inside a vehicle. He was driving while his grandson, Jonah Martínez, was handling a Ruger handgun en route to a target shooting session. Jonah reportedly pulled the slide back, believing the gun was unloaded, and his finger engaged the trigger; the single round struck Alonzo and proved fatal. Investigators determined the shooting to be accidental. Jonah Martínez was later charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with his grandfather’s death.
The community remembers Alonzo as a longtime Taos resident whose sudden death devastated his family. Are there anyone who knew Alonzo or saw news from Taos about the case who can share details that might help others understand what happened?
