On June 15, 2017, a domestic dispute in La Madera, Rio Arriba County, escalated into a deadly rampage that began when 21-year-old Damian Herrera shot and killed his mother, 49-year-old Maria Rosita Gallegos, his stepfather, 55-year-old Max Trujillo Sr., and his 20-year-old brother, Brendon Herrera, inside the family home. After those killings, Herrera fled and continued a path of violence across northern New Mexico.

Traveling north, Herrera reached Tres Piedras, where he shot and killed 61-year-old Michael Kyte and stole Kyte’s truck. He later went to Abiquiu and shot and killed 59-year-old Manuel Serrano at a local general store. A large manhunt ended the same day with Herrera’s apprehension after a high-speed chase.
