In the summer of 2015 in Deming, New Mexico, 37-year-old Hispanic/Latino Richard Perez was shot after reports of gunfire on the 1100 block of Gold Street. Officers found Perez with gunshot wounds; he was taken to Mimbres Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.
Investigators identified 25-year-old Robert Tafoya as a suspect and a warrant was issued. Tafoya surrendered to the U.S. Marshals Service in Las Cruces on July 10, 2015, and was charged with an open count of murder and with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case proceeded to a jury trial in January 2017, where Tafoya testified he fired two rounds after an altercation and claimed Perez was reaching for a weapon; a witness said Perez had been belligerent and had a history of violence. The jury acquitted Tafoya of first-degree murder after three days, while the firearms-possession count remained pending at the verdict.
Does anyone have information about Perez’s movements in Deming that evening or other witnesses to the shooting?
