Charles Edward Dehner, 74, vanished on July 16, 1992, while huckleberry picking with his wife north of Priest Lake in Bonner County, Idaho. The pair were experienced foragers who owned a cabin in the remote area and became separated in dense woods in the Caribou Creek drainage near Lionhead Campground. Dehner was carrying the truck keys when he disappeared and never returned.
A large search and rescue operation followed quickly, involving as many as 150 people, tracking dogs, and aircraft. The terrain between Caribou Hill and Trapper Creek is rugged, with dense forest, steep hillsides, and thick underbrush, which hampered efforts. Searchers found a sock, underwear, and some unidentified tissue and fluids, but investigators could not link those items definitively to Dehner.
Described as a white male about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, 165 to 175 pounds, with white hair and brown eyes, he was reported in good health and familiar with the area. Despite exhaustive searches and follow-up by the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, he has never been located and remains a missing person.
If anyone was in the Lionhead Campground or Caribou Creek area on or around July 16, 1992, or has information that could help, please share what is known.
