On January 19, 2013, 9-year-old Zephaniah Azariah Griego was among four members of a South Valley, New Mexico family fatally shot in their home. The victims included Zephaniah, his parents Sara Griego, 40, and Gregory Griego, 51, and his 5-year-old sibling Jael Griego. The shooter was their 15-year-old son and brother, Nehemiah Griego, who used a .22-caliber rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun.
Nehemiah Griego was arrested by the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office after the bodies were discovered and charged with two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death. Prosecutors said the killings were planned in advance; defense attorneys raised mental health issues while noting his interest in violent video games and mass shootings. In 2015 Nehemiah Griego pleaded guilty and received two life terms plus 30 years in prison.
If anyone knew Zephaniah or the family and has information to share about their lives or the events leading up to January 19, 2013, please come forward.
