Michael Arnold, 69, and his companion Donna Gallegos, 65, were found shot to death inside the shop area of their home on Black Bridge Road in Paonia, Colorado, after friends reported not seeing them for several days. Deputies responding to a welfare check on February 4, 2022, discovered both victims with multiple gunshot wounds; the Delta County Sheriff’s Office opened a homicide investigation and described the killings as deliberate and targeted.
Investigators focused on 69-year-old Mark Burns, who had rented a home on Arnold’s property for about three years before moving to Idaho in September 2021. That tenancy ended amid a contentious relationship; Burns had allegedly made threats against Arnold and had been involved with a woman who had previously been with Arnold and who had litigated against Arnold. About two weeks after the bodies were found, Burns was arrested in Salmon, Idaho, after surveillance video from the property reportedly showed him shooting Arnold and Gallegos. He waived extradition and was brought back to Delta County to face charges.
The case proceeded to trial, and the jury returned guilty verdicts on counts that included first-degree murder. Are there details about Arnold’s life in Paonia or his relationships with neighbors that could help explain how events escalated to this level?
