Jody Ann Waters was 65 and a Boulder, Colorado resident of 42 years. A mother and grandmother who owned the retail store Applause for 23 years, she operated locations on the Pearl Street Mall and in Cherry Creek and Broomfield and was described by friends and family as outgoing, warm, and deeply connected to her community.

On March 22, 2021, Waters was one of ten people killed in a mass shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder. She was hiding under a checkout counter when the shooter pointed an assault rifle at her and fired multiple times. Her death devastated her daughters, grandchildren, friends, and colleagues.

The suspect, identified as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, was arrested at the scene after an exchange of gunfire with police in which he sustained a leg wound and was charged with ten counts of first-degree murder and additional offenses. After competency proceedings, he was found fit to stand trial and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity; the trial began in September 2024 with prosecutors presenting evidence they say shows the attack was deliberate and planned.
