Ricardo Medina-Rojas, 40, was shot and killed on the morning of February 3, 2021, at the Legacy Assisted Living facility in Lafayette, Colorado, where he worked as a maintenance worker. According to reports, a 95-year-old resident, Okey Payne, confronted Medina-Rojas in the lobby accusing staff of stealing $200 from his wallet; Payne then shot Medina-Rojas in the head. Payne returned to his room and was later arrested.
Investigators say Payne confessed, telling them he shot Medina-Rojas to teach staff a lesson and to stop alleged stealing; police had previously investigated Payne’s theft claims and found them without merit. Payne was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of felony menacing related to allegedly brandishing the pistol at two people who tried to help after the shooting. Facility management said firearms were not permitted on the premises.
If anyone knew Ricardo, worked at the facility, or saw something that morning, please share information.
