Michael Atkinson, 41, was fatally shot in his Westminster, Colorado home in the early morning hours of October 24, 2020. His ex-girlfriend had gone to the house in the 5600 block of West 76th Avenue to retrieve belongings, believing he was not there, and was accompanied by a friend, Jessee Riepe, who waited outside.

Atkinson reportedly returned while his ex-girlfriend was inside and a confrontation followed during which she says he assaulted her. She sent a text to Riepe for help. Riepe entered the house, encountered Atkinson, and was struck in the eye. He said he feared for his safety as Atkinson advanced; while backing toward the front door with Atkinson following, Riepe drew a .45 caliber handgun and fired, hitting Atkinson in the upper torso. Riepe called 911 and attempted first aid. Atkinson was later pronounced dead at St. Anthony’s North Medical Center.
