On the afternoon of August 21, 2020, a disturbance near 7th Avenue and 12th Street in Greeley, Colorado, ended in gunfire that killed 20-year-old Elijah Joziah Duran of Aurora. Officers responding around 5:15 p.m. found two men shot; Duran was pronounced dead at the scene. Nineteen-year-old Deionte Lashay Dior Johnson-Smith, also from Aurora, was taken to a hospital and died the next morning.
Greeley police and the Weld County District Attorney’s Office investigated the double homicide and interviewed numerous witnesses who had been present. What precipitated the shooting and whether the parties knew each other remained unclear. After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors concluded they could not disprove the shooter’s claim of self-defense and did not file criminal charges. No arrests were announced.
Did anyone in the area see or hear anything that evening that might clarify how the disturbance escalated to gunfire?
