David Michael Draper, 54, was shot and killed in Cañon City, Colorado, on February 11, 2019. A longtime local who enjoyed playing guitar, crafting custom canes from wood gathered while logging, and spending time along the Arkansas River, Draper was known to friends and family as Mikey Dave.

The shooting followed a confrontation that escalated into violence. Police identified the person who fired the fatal shot and treated the incident as a potential case of self-defense. The matter was referred to the Fremont County District Attorney’s Office, which reviewed the evidence and determined the killing was justified. No charges were filed and no arrest was made.
