Brett Ojiyi, 21, a running back and student at Colorado Mesa University, was shot and killed in the early moments of September 22, 2018, at an apartment in Grand Junction. Officers arrived about 12:05 a.m. and found him on the floor inside the front door with a single gunshot wound to the chest; he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy showed the bullet passed through his right lung and heart and lodged in his left side. Toxicology detected THC.

Several people were present in the apartment when the shot was fired, including Gary Scott, Daryl Hawkins, Jackson Burrell, Marcus Hines, Tylin Charles, Virnel Moon, Sage Manoa, and Kayla Kanaha. Witnesses said there had been no argument or fight beforehand. A handgun was later found hidden in a laundry basket; video from a week earlier showed Ojiyi handling a black semi-automatic handgun in the residence. Prosecutors considered charges against Gary Scott but the 21st Judicial District Attorney declined to file charges, concluding there was insufficient evidence to prove who fired the fatal shot and closing the case.

Did anyone who knew Brett or who was at that apartment notice anything about gun storage or handling there before September 22, 2018?
