On the morning of September 16, 2018, 26-year-old Brandon Ray Sanchez was shot and killed outside a home at 3116 Chipeta Avenue in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mesa County deputies responding to a call found Sanchez’s body near a garage where several people had been sleeping. Witnesses said Sanchez and a male relative arrived unannounced, forced their way into the garage and began attacking occupants with a broomstick and a piece of rebar; a broom was found next to Sanchez and a piece of rebar was recovered in the garage.
The shooter was identified as 34-year-old renter Melissa Pruitt, who said she fired the fatal shot. She and others left in an SUV and were stopped shortly afterward; officers found three guns and an unspecified amount of drugs in the vehicle. Pruitt invoked her right to an attorney and declined to speak with investigators.
Sanchez’s family disputed that he was an intruder, saying he was romantically involved with a woman at the main residence and often stayed there, and they disagreed with the decision not to charge Pruitt. Did anyone in the area know Sanchez’s connection to that house or witness the confrontation that morning?
