Deputy Derek Mace Geer, 40, was mortally wounded while on duty in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Monday, February 8, 2016. A 15-year veteran of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and a U.S. Navy veteran, Geer was married and a father of two. He was responding to a report of an armed person near 30 Road and E Road when he located 17-year-old Austin Patrick Holzer. A struggle ensued; Geer deployed his taser, but Holzer produced a handgun and shot Geer multiple times, including in the face. Geer radioed for help and was taken to a local hospital where he was placed on life support so his organs could be donated.

Holzer was found hiding a short time later in a nearby backyard and taken into custody. He was a runaway with an outstanding warrant and a history of drug use, and had expressed a desire to avoid capture. Austin Holzer was charged as an adult. Did anyone in the community have contact with Deputy Geer or Holzer before February 8, 2016, who can add detail about that morning?
