Ron Torgersen, 51, was shot on a remote ridge top of Wilderness Ranch, a subdivision about 30 miles northeast of Craig, Colorado, on the evening of June 24, 2014. He and his 58-year-old neighbor, David Hazelip, owned adjoining mountain properties; at some point that day an encounter between them escalated and both men discharged firearms. Deputies who responded to Hazelip’s property found Ron gravely wounded by gunfire. He was flown from Craig to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction and died there on July 2, 2014, after eight days in the hospital.
The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office treated the shooting as a potential self-defense incident and publicly identified Hazelip as the person who shot Ron, noting an affirmative claim of self-defense might apply. Detectives collected evidence, ordered an autopsy, and submitted findings to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office; at the time of the primary local reporting no arrests had been announced. Ron’s family remember him as a devoted husband and father, an avid outdoorsman planning to build a log cabin on the property he was preparing when the shooting occurred.
Does anyone have additional information about the confrontation on Wilderness Ranch or about Ron’s time there?
