On the evening of January 23, 2007, 37-year-old Heather Lynn Hodges Garraus was shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Colorado State Employees Credit Union in Greeley as she left work and died at the scene. Investigators determined the killing was targeted rather than random and tied it to an ongoing affair between Heather’s husband, Greeley Police Officer Ignacio Garraus, and Shawna Nelson, a former 911 dispatcher. Nelson allegedly sent harassing texts to Heather in the weeks before the murder and, on the night of the shooting, was found driving her husband’s truck that matched tire tracks near the credit union.
A grim reaper mask was recovered from the vehicle, and shoes with gunshot residue and Nelson’s DNA were recovered where she was apprehended. Michelle Moore, described as Nelson’s close friend, later admitted involvement, pleaded guilty to being an accessory, and agreed to testify against Nelson. In early 2008 Shawna Nelson was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole; both Ignacio Garraus and Ken Nelson subsequently resigned from their law enforcement jobs and Ken Nelson’s tampering charge was later dropped.
Does anyone have information about Heather’s final hours or the harassment she received in the weeks before the murder?
