Ian Michael Deutch, 27, was killed on April 26, 2010, in Pahrump, Nevada, after responding as a Nye County deputy to a desperate 911 call about a domestic disturbance. The caller had fled to Terrible’s Lakeside Casino and RV Resort, saying she was being pursued and shot at by her boyfriend. Deutch and his partner were the first deputies on scene; the suspect, identified as James Lacy Chaffin, opened fire with an SKS rifle. Deutch was struck by three rounds to the abdomen that penetrated his protective vest. A third deputy who arrived exchanged fire with the suspect; Chaffin was shot and killed. Despite immediate medical attention, Deputy Deutch succumbed to his wounds.

Deutch was a husband and father of two, a six-year member of the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and a K-9 handler partnered with Chico. He was also a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard’s 221st Cavalry Wildhorse Squadron who had recently returned from deployment to Afghanistan and had received multiple awards, including a Medal of Valor.
