Raul Paul Elizondo was a 27-year-old North Las Vegas police officer who was fatally shot in the pre-dawn hours of January 30, 1995. He had been responding to a call about a suspicious, erratically behaving man walking into traffic near Magnet Street and Evans Avenue when a confrontation and struggle occurred. During the altercation the suspect gained control of Officer Elizondo’s service weapon and shot him in the side, the bullet penetrating between panels of his protective vest.

Officer Elizondo managed to radio for help and was taken to University Medical Center, where he died of his wounds. Responding officers exchanged gunfire with the man, who fled a short distance and died at the scene; the suspect’s identity was not publicly released and no arrests were made.
