Emmett Alexander Johnson, 62, and his wife Lois Mildred Johnson, 59, were bound and murdered at a rest stop near Ely, Nevada, on September 18, 1974. The killings were attributed to Paul John Knowles, known as the Casanova Killer, who by that time had already committed multiple violent homicides while traveling across several states.

Knowles reportedly used charm and theft of victims’ vehicles as part of his crimes; he later claimed far more victims than authorities could confirm. He was recognized and taken into custody after a chaotic November 16, 1974, encounter with Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Charles Eugene Campbell that led to further murders, a multi-agency manhunt, and his arrest. Knowles died on December 18, 1974, during a struggle while being transported by law enforcement.

Are there surviving family members or witnesses who remember the Johnsons or the rest stop incident and can add any details?
