On March 19, 2022, Harold L. Sheets, 64, was found inside a residence at 111 W. Park Street in Pittsburg, Kansas, with a gunshot wound. Officers and emergency medical personnel arrived about 12:45 a.m.; Sheets was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports say a dispute inside the home escalated and culminated in the shooting.

Police focused their investigation on 61-year-old Verla L. Gilliland, who was believed to have been involved in the argument with Sheets. Gilliland was taken to the police department for questioning, then arrested and charged with second-degree murder. She was booked into the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office jail on a $150,000 bond. The investigation into what happened that night is ongoing.
