On the night of Friday, March 26, 2021, a shooting on the 3100 block of Southeast Bryant Street in Topeka left 39-year-old Kristi Ann Rodriguez fatally wounded. Two other people were shot that night; one suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, the other sustained non-life-threatening wounds.
Investigators identified two persons of interest, 28-year-old Devonta B. Miller of Topeka and 21-year-old Harlee E. Borders of Marysville. A tip led police to an apartment in Manhattan, Kansas, and both were arrested without incident two days after the shooting. They were returned to Topeka and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on charges including first-degree murder in Rodriguez’s death, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, and child endangerment. Authorities also tied them to a two-vehicle crash at Southeast 31st and Southeast Adams that occurred shortly after the shooting.
Borders was convicted in 2022 and received a life sentence. In March 2025 Miller pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated battery; sentencing was scheduled for the following month. Does anyone have additional information about what happened that night or knew Kristi Rodriguez?
