On the evening of November 20, 2020, 38-year-old Samuel Hutton was found inside a vehicle at the intersection of Madison Avenue and the U.S. 77 bypass in Arkansas City, Kansas, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel took him to South Central Kansas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined the shooting took place at a residence at 1325 South A Street in the southeast part of the city rather than at the intersection where Hutton was found. Police identified 40-year-old James Lyle Clark as a suspect, obtained and executed a search warrant at that home, and conducted a manhunt. With assistance from the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office, Clark was located east of Arkansas City and taken into custody without incident at about 5:35 a.m. on November 21, 2020; he was booked on suspicion of second-degree murder.

Anyone with information about Hutton, his movements that night, or the events at the South A Street residence is asked to come forward.
