On the evening of August 16, 2020, 34-year-old Matthew James Smith was found with a gunshot wound inside a residence in the 1200 block of 6th Avenue in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries. The Leavenworth Police Department opened a homicide investigation after the shooting.
