On the evening of January 20, 2018, 17-year-old John Albers was shot and killed in the driveway of his Overland Park, Kansas home after a friend called 911 reporting he was suicidal. Officers arriving for a welfare check encountered Albers as he began backing the family minivan out of the garage. Officer Clayton Jenison fired a total of 13 rounds; the initial two shots were fired while the vehicle was in motion and he then fired 11 more as the minivan executed a reverse turn. Albers was struck six times and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Johnson County District Attorney declined to file criminal charges, describing the shooting as justified, and Officer Jenison resigned from the department and received a $70,000 severance. The FBI opened a federal civil rights investigation in September 2020; after that inquiry, the Department of Justice in September 2022 announced it would not bring federal criminal civil rights charges, concluding the use of force was unreasonable but that evidence was insufficient to prove a willful violation beyond a reasonable doubt. The family later settled a lawsuit against the city and the officer for $2.3 million. No arrests were reported in connection with Albers’s death.

If anyone witnessed the welfare check or has information about what happened that night, please share what is known.
