Leah Elizabeth Brown was 22 when she was fatally shot in the early morning hours of October 1, 2017, in downtown Lawrence, Kansas. A Black/African American woman from Shawnee, Kansas, she had been on medical leave from U.S. Navy boot camp and went to Lawrence for a night out with a friend after her mother encouraged that option over the Westport area in Kansas City.
Shortly after 1:30 a.m., as bars were closing at 11th and Massachusetts streets, a dispute escalated into gunfire. Leah and her friend were walking toward their car after leaving a bar when they encountered what appeared to be a fistfight. Gunshots erupted and a stray bullet struck Leah in the side of the chest; she collapsed at the scene and died of her injuries. Two other people, Colwin Lynn Henderson, 20, and Tre Mel Dupree Dean-Rayton, 24, both of Topeka, were also killed, and two others were wounded but survived.
Authorities identified 20-year-old Anthony Laron Roberts Jr., of Topeka, as the primary shooter and charged him in connection with the deaths; two other men, Ahmad Rayton and Dominique J. McMillon, also faced charges related to the incident. Does anyone have information about Leah’s last night in Lawrence or about the shooting at 11th and Massachusetts?
