Autumn Grace Smith was one year old when she died in Lawrence, Kansas, on September 22, 2017, from a gunshot wound sustained inside her family’s home. Police say Autumn and a two-year-old boy were left unattended, located an accessible handgun, and the firearm discharged; first responders performed CPR but Autumn was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers reported finding a handgun, a loaded magazine, and a spent shell casing on the bed next to her body.

Autumn’s father, Chance M. Smith, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of aggravated endangerment of a child, one count for Autumn and one for the two-year-old who had been present. Autumn’s mother, Megan Smith, remembered her as bright, joyful, and always smiling; a memorial service was held on what would have been her second birthday.
