On the evening of February 22, 2017, 32-year-old engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla was shot and killed while having an after-work drink with a colleague, Alok Madasani, at Austins Bar & Grill in Olathe, Kansas.
Purinton returned to the bar after going home, armed with a semi-automatic pistol and wearing an attempt at a disguise. He entered the enclosed patio, opened the door, and began firing. Kuchibhotla was struck multiple times and died of his wounds. Madasani was also shot but survived, and a third man, Ian Grillot, was wounded after chasing Purinton in an effort to subdue him.
Purinton fled the scene and was later located and arrested after telling a bartender at another establishment that he had killed two Middle Eastern men. He has been charged in state court with premeditated first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, and is also facing federal hate-crime charges. Anyone who knew Srinivas, his routine in the Kansas City area, or who witnessed the events that night is asked to come forward with information.
