Jurl Carter was 24 when he was fatally shot on September 16, 2015, in the parking lot outside Jim Kilroy’s Roxy Bar at 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park, Kansas. An aspiring rapper known as Yunglyfe Carter or Bo Boogy, he had gone to the bar hoping to perform. The confrontation began after Carter pulled into a spot and nearly hit rapper Dale Poppa Willo Willis; witnesses say Dale punched Carter, knocking him to the ground. Carter climbed into his car to leave, and as he drove off multiple shots were fired into the vehicle. He was struck four times in the chest and died despite first aid from responding officers.

Police identified brothers Dale Willis and his younger brother James Willis as suspects and charged both with first-degree murder. Prosecutors said Dale instructed James to shoot; a fingerprint belonging to Dale was found on Carter’s car. Surveillance video captured the punch and the shooting sequence but was not clear enough for definitive identification. Witness accounts conflicted, some naming James as the shooter and one saying Dale fired. Separate juries ultimately convicted both brothers of first-degree murder; Dale was also convicted of misdemeanor battery. Both received life sentences with no parole for 50 years.
