Christine Kaplan, 56, was found dead in her Lawrence, Kansas, home on July 27, 2014. Friends who had come to do yard work discovered her body when one went to the basement for a broom. An autopsy showed she suffered dozens of stab wounds.

Investigators focused on a woman Kaplan had befriended and allowed to stay in her home, 38-year-old Angelica M. Kulp. Reports said Kaplan had asked Kulp to leave after complaints of disrespect and high water bills, and that Kaplan had expressed fear of her. Kulp was located in Topeka days later and arrested on an unrelated burglary; an arrest warrant charging her with first-degree murder followed. Investigators say Kulp allegedly told a friend she had killed someone, and Kulp’s fingerprints and footprints were found in blood at the scene.
